Ginko leaf lid rest

Lid rest for use when a utensil stand is used in the tea procedure. The pattern of paired ginko leaves in green and gold reflect the passage of time from spring green to autumn gold. The ginko has been associated with the Urasenke Tradition of Tea from the time of Sen Sotan (1578-1658), third generation head of Urasenke. Sotan planted a ginko tree near the tearooms in which he lived that flourishes still today. Furthermore, the pattern of paired leaves borrows from a classic design known as "futari shizuka" in which two cranes appear to embrace one another, wing tip to wing tip, their graceful necks bending in opposite directions. Kyoto ware (Kyo-yaki)
